Space in interior design is a must. Obviously without the "space" there would be nothing to "design". What about creating space where there is none, or creating the space on a two dimensional plane. There are several ways to create space.

Transparency:

Ambiguity:
Obscure motif or meaning.
Vertical Location:
Placing an object high on the surface plane, to indicate it is farther back.
